Travel tips

Eating gluten free in restaurants can be challenging, but enjoyable.

Discuss your needs with your server. Menus rarely list every ingredient in a dish. Food preparation happens behind closed doors and cross-contamination is a constant risk.

Whether you are traveling by car, train or plane (remember to order gluten-free meals ahead of time), be prepared to travel with snacks, preferably non-perishable snacks.

Reading food labels is a MUST! There is so much hidden gluten in our food supply that it is important to identify what might be in your foods. It’s not always obvious because it’s under strange names like malt, barley, modified food starch (ouch…that’s everywhere). I have gotten “burned” by buying foods that I NEVER thought would contain gluten only to discover gluten in it when I got home. Foods like yogurt or cottage cheese!

The new US-FDA allergen labeling has made it easier to identify gluten in foods since wheat has been added to the list along with peanut and soy warnings. Some manufacturers have a gluten-free symbol on the food packaging. Become familiar with the different symbols. There are three common ones on this page: the Certified Gluten Free with GF in a circle, the icon used on the Gluten-free Mall and the icon on GlutenFree.com. These are just three of many symbols used.

Hidden gluten

Soy Sauce –most contain wheat. Malt – made from barley, used in some vinegars (e.g., malt vinegar). Ask if there is gluten in–flavorings, medications, vitamins, mineral supplements, toothpaste and cosmetics. Fried foods – due to cross-contamination if cooked with other foods. Processed Foods –a favorite place for gluten to hide. Read labels! Alcohol – SAFE: wine, champagne, distilled spirits: brandy, coffee liqueur cognac, gin, grappa, rum, sake, scotch, sherry, tequila, vodka, wine, whiskey. NOT SAFE: malt beverages like beer (unless labeled Gluten Free), coolers & hard lemonade often contain malt and/or barley.
